It is important to understand the community factors that may influence family units in various ways. One of the community factors that may affect family units is insecurity. It creates an environment where members of the family are always concerned about their lives. In some extreme cases, it may cause disenfranchisement in a family unit, especially when other weakling members of the family are forced to leave the neighborhood to stay in safer places. The level of literacy in the neighborhood, poverty levels, and unity may also affect a family unit in various ways. The outbreak of diseases such as Ebola, Whooping Cough any other communicable disease may also affect the family structure.

The rich or middle class who have easy access to medical services and professional advice can easily plan on the number of children they want. This is not the case among poor families. The low social class status also disadvantages the function and processes of families. A family that lacks financial capacity may not afford quality healthcare services. Such families also lack basic education on how they can stay healthy by maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in physical exercise, or any other activities that may help them stay healthy.
