From a medical perspective, any threat to the human body activates the sympathetic nervous system, which triggers an urgent stress response that directs the body to either flee or face the problem. These reactions are essential because they help one adapt to stressful situations and improve one’s chances of survival. Consequently, there are instances that call for the fight or flight response.
Having an Argument
Disagreements and arguments are a normal part of human relationships which often call for the fight or flight response. When a quarrel gets intense, the stress levels of the parties involved increase, triggering the psychological reaction which instructs the body to leave the scene or stay and fight, emotionally or physically. Depending on the temper and relationship of the individuals, one can decide to do either. However, most people are offensive and, therefore, will settle on the fight response.
Escaping From a Fire
Everyone fears death and anything that might threaten their wellbeing. Fire is one of those things which will call for an automatic psychological response. An individual’s reaction to either fight or flee during a fire varies depending on the size of the fire. For instance, when the fire is small enough, the probable response will be to use a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. On the other hand, when the fire is too big to be doused, the best reaction will be to look for an exit and escape. Nonetheless, the flight response is always the first thought which comes to mind whenever one sees a fire.

Similar to the fire case, a mugger is not only robbing people but also attacking them, which poses a threat to lives. The amount of stress is determined by the level of threat, meaning that the fear of being attacked creates more tension. Consequently, when one is being chased by a mugger, the natural reaction will be to run for one’s life, particularly if they have a gun or a knife. However, in cases where the person being chased has been cornered, then the response will be to defend themselves by fighting back.
Driving In Traffic
Traffics attract tension, particularly to timid and careful drivers or those who are new to driving on major highways. Additionally, there are reckless drivers who often create traffic jams and tensions on most roads. Such factors trigger stress in road users forcing individuals to either fight or flight. When a vehicle swerves towards another, the offended driver goes through mixed feelings, including anger, fear, and anxiety calling for an acute reaction. Consequently, the normal reaction will be to protect oneself by stepping on the gas pedal and fleeing the dangerous area.
