The film “When a Man Loves a Woman” is a mixture of genres. However, the relevant one in this context is that it aims to highlight the role of a family when dealing with an individual having an addiction. Even though the couple in the film is a perfect presentation of love, more is required when handling family problems. Alice, the wife, is addicted to the extent that she fails to return home at times and sneaks out in the weird hours of the night to quench her urge.
The husband is an ideal partner who supports his wife, who thinks he overshadows her, and this seems to make her feel weaker and incapable of handling issues. I feel that it is because of his strong love for his family that he was ready to do anything to ensure that they all stayed together. He presents as a person who is willing to change and make it work as he never opposes what his wife says or suggests.
I could relate with Michael, the husband, who seems not to understand his wife and the stressors that drive her to alcoholism. He is not aware that his wife goes to the extent of adopting a secretive demeanor to get drunk. Nonetheless, listening more to an individual struggling with an addiction could help them feel better and fight with the dependence. I realized that I had a false illusion of how to handle a person struggling with a negative habit.
