Men and women have been differentiated based on their gender for a long time. Society has put certain expectations on female and male individuals concerning diverse aspects of life, such as occupation and parenting. For instance, representatives of distinct genders can labor in the same field, yet women’s work is often limited to basic positions or confined to looking after children and maintaining the household (Miller and Woodward 341). In comparison, men’s work encompasses a variety of occupations, from simple jobs to overseeing nations. For example, even such an economically advanced country as Saudi Arabia has extreme gender segregation, with only 20% of female persons having careers compared to 80% of male individuals (“Women and the Saudi Revolution” 00:02:20-00:02:24). Based on the instances of several women who have led countries, female politicians can positively impact the view of women and change gender stereotypes.
A woman running for the President of the US could influence gender stereotypes by bringing awareness to the challenges and potencies of the female population. For example, when Hillary Clinton ran for office, she gave speeches on the importance of empowering women and, with her prior work, demonstrated that females can thrive in politics (“Top Ten” 00:06:50-00:07:15). Notably, many countries have had female leaders who have confirmed that women can successfully supervise governments. For instance, Park Geun-Hye, Sought Korea’s former President, has promoted gender equality, opposed North Korea’s threats, and facilitated the economy (“Top Ten” 00:02:55-00:03:57). The late Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom proved to be a reliable and stable ruler who modernized the monarchy and has done plenty of charity work (“Top Ten” 00:12:10-00:12:28). Angela Merkel, Germany’s ex-chancellor, has pushed the country through the global economic crisis and supported many European countries during difficult times (“Top Ten” 00:12:30-00:13:10). Therefore, a woman running for the US’s President can impact gender stereotypes by drawing attention to female individuals’ problems and showing that women can be triumphant leaders.
Furthermore, the increased number of women in politics can positively affect the view of female people around the world. Women are often anticipated to spend most of the day doing household chores or nurturing children (Miller and Woodward 341). Moreover, female persons are frequently judged based on their looks rather than their achievements or aspirations (Miller and Woodward 342). However, female politicians can change how women are perceived by setting role models, like the above-discussed rulers, proving that women can do various tasks, and illustrating that one’s capabilities are not determined by gender.
Modern society needs more women in global leadership roles to promote equality and facilitate diversity that would bring new points of view on ongoing problems. It appears that the female population is perceived as concerned with small matters in life, such as having anxious relationships with their wardrobes (Miller and Woodward 345). Nonetheless, female leaders can offer unique solutions to different problems in business, enable progressive operations in science, engineering, and technology, and enhance worldwide economies while maintaining stable geopolitical situations (“Top Ten” 00:01:12-00:13:25). Therefore, women can and should have more power over important issues to help society overcome challenges and develop.
To conclude, female individuals in ruling positions can change gender stereotypes and positively impact how women are regarded worldwide. Such global leaders as Park Geun-Hye, Queen Elizabeth II, and Angela Merkel have set substantial precedents for how women can successfully manage entire nations. Moreover, politicians like Hillary Clinton bring awareness to challenges encountered by the female population and can inspire women to seek equality. In addition, many female executives around the world have proven that women can also flourish in such areas as business, science, and technology. Accordingly, women, especially those assuming leadership roles, can facilitate society’s further growth.
