Undoubtedly, in mixed classes, it is impossible to adhere to only one approach. However, it is necessary to take into account all students’ characteristics and build the educational process accordingly.
Another interesting detail is the audience size, comfortable for men and women. According to Tannen, men are calmer in speaking in front of a large company, while women are better off functioning in small groups. This can be applied in classes, for example, discussing issues within teams of several people, after which their “captains” – boys – would present the results to everyone. This kind of education will give everyone a contribution to the work and comfortable atmosphere. Another idea suggested by Tannen is a discussion of students’ communication in the classroom by themselves. As part of this discussion, they should understand everyone’s comfortable ways of interaction. Being better aware of each other’s characteristics makes students more open and empathetic, which also improves the quality of education.
