Criminal justice organizations have elaborate operational mechanisms designed to achieve the set goals, objectives, missions, and visions. However, these organizations are subject to external factors and stressors coming from the environment within which they operate. According to Allen and Sawhney, some of these environmental factors that influence criminal justice organizations include “funding opportunities, technological advancements, the cultural and demographic characteristics of the community, legal decisions, political decisions, and unions and unions negotiations”. Others include the media and the USA Supreme Court decisions within the American context. The state of funding influences criminal justice organizations significantly because, without resources, these bodies cannot execute their mandate. For instance, the police will not be proactive in combating crime, and the rehabilitation of offenders would be a challenge.
Similarly, technology has changed the way these organizations operate by making work easy. However, the technology requires a trained workforce, which could be lacking in most cases. Additionally, evolving technology means that new forms of crimes emerge, hence the need for criminal justice organizations to remain abreast with these changes. Similarly, with globalization and increased immigration, society is increasingly becoming diverse with different cultures and demographics, and thus these organizations have to be prepared for the challenges and opportunities that come with the same. Legal decisions could also introduce major challenges to these organizations, just like political influence. Finally, unions and the associated negotiations could change the way criminal justice organizations operate in the quest to make the jobs within this sector to be in line with the various objectives of unionization.
