There is a good reason why partisan politics is popular all over the world. It is a byproduct of man’s ability to organize and create efficient systems. If elections are held on a regular basis then it is just logical to establish a group that not only will groom the next candidate but also ensure that this person gets elected using the most practical and cost-efficient method possible. This includes recruiting volunteers who will help in the campaign process. Political parties are not only used to manage elections but also as a mechanism to generate funds.
After more than two centuries of democracy, some of the more established US political parties are now fixtures in American society. The Republican and Democrat parties are so powerful that they virtually control the whole election process. This means that unless a worthy candidate belongs to either of these two parties there is a very slim chance that he or she will get elected. This is bad news for minorities and bad news for those who wanted to elect someone not beholden to any entity.
In non-partisan elections, “…candidates are listed on the ballot only by name and sometimes occupation, with no indication of party affiliation”. The nonpartisan election is considered one of the most important electoral reforms in this country. It is even considered as the most widespread of all reforms with 72.6 percent of all U.S. cities and 94 percent of those in the West having nonpartisan elections. This is a truly positive development in terms of electoral reform. This time the minorities can be represented in government. If the area has a significant number of immigrants there is now a chance that this person can elect one of their own, someone who truly understands their plight and when elected will ratify policies that will surely address the social problems in the area.
