Over the last two decades, technology has dramatically transformed the world. Some of these significant emerging technologies are artificial intelligence and machine learning which attempts to simulate typical human reasoning. These technological inventions have, over the years, become dominant in most problem-solving techniques. The technologies are currently used in various industries like research, healthcare, education, and business. So far, Artificial Intelligence and machine learning have a generally positive effect on these industries. These benefits will undoubtedly outweigh the drawbacks in the future.
Human beings are always in a constant search for more effective ways of handling tasks with minimal errors. With artificial intelligence and machine learning, common human errors can be eliminated. AI technology often depends on previously gathered information programmed in algorithms. Therefore, when appropriately programmed, the application increases the chances of completing a task with the highest precision. For instance, in the meteorology industry, Artificial Intelligence and machine learning helps to process vast amounts of data (Bochenek & Ustmul, 2022). The speed and accuracy of these technologies can therefore eliminate human errors and improve the accuracy of weather forecasts.
AI and machine learning technologies will also facilitate major advances in the healthcare industry. Artificial intelligence is making inroads into this sector by supporting medical practitioners with diagnosis, tracking the causes of certain diseases, performing surgeries, and making recommendations on illnesses. Gumbs et al. (2021), predict that although there is current resistance to automation of medical tasks, the future of AI medicine and AI surgery as two distinct disciplines is great. According to Tai (2020), artificial intelligence-based surgical procedures enable great precision and accuracy beyond a human surgeon. Robotically aided surgery can also help mitigate the limitations of the present minimally invasive surgical techniques and improve surgeons’ abilities while performing open surgery.
With the rapid growth of technology, most countries are working towards exploring more dangerous projects. For instance, the US has numerous risky projects like scientific experiments, visits to mars, and exploring the deep parts of the ocean. Such activities prove to be dangerous for human beings. However, through artificial intelligence and machine learning, AI-based robots can be used to intervene in some of these hazardous tasks. In 1986, an explosion occurred in one of the nuclear power stations at Chernobyl (U.S.NRC, 2022). However, since there was no AI technology to help mitigate the fire, people attempted to put out the fire. However, this resulted in a disaster, killing many people who went close to the explosion. In such a scenario, AI robots would have been used to take risks instead of humans.
In addition to helping solve critical problems, artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies helps to enhance people’s daily activities. Human beings can only work for a limited number of hours per day. In addition, during these work hours, they experience exhaustion and thus need some time to rest. However, unlike human beings, AI-based machines do not need breaks and thus can work 24 hours a day. This factor makes the technology adopted in businesses assist in the helpline centers. In addition, AI cognitive automation can be used in the banking industry to help solve repetitive tasks such as document verifications. Consequently, the technologies save time, benefiting both the business and the customers.
Artificial intelligence and Machine learning also help to enhance the future of the global environment. According to Vinuesa et al. (2020), AI technologies can be an enabler of over 90% of environmental targets, thus improving the health of ecosystems. The technology can be used to analyze large-scale environmental data aimed at preserving the environment. For instance, AI and machine learning algorithms can automatically identify oil spills in water bodies (Vinuesa et al., 2020). Such information can consequently be used to call for the reduction of marine pollution. Similarly, the technologies can be used to create low-carbon systems to enhance energy efficiency by supporting renewable energy.
AI technology also benefits society in the completion of daily tasks. For instance, businesses require a support team to clarify various customers’ concerns. Therefore, the organization would require numerous staff to form a good customer care team. However, human beings are always prone to analyze situations emotionally. This factor leaves people using a lot of time to complete a single task. However, AI-powered machines are programmed to deliver results on time. In addition, these AI-powered digital assistant programs like chatbots save businesses the need for human resources.
In conclusion, AI and machine learning technology have a generally positive effect on various industries. For instance, technological advancements have a significant effect on the advancement of healthcare. In addition, AI is essential in making people’s daily lives easier and safer by taking the most risks instead of it being a human being. The technology also helps in completing repetitive tasks, which can exhaust human staff. AI and machine learning impacts society positively and the benefits can be predicted to outweigh its drawbacks in the future.
