It could be stated with certainty the education is one of the core aspects of the development of an individual. The importance of educational practices is well recognized in the majority of countries around the world. Enough, the United States is not an exception. However, it is also evident that education progresses along with the overall development of society. Numerous factors contribute to the changing nature of educational processes: scientific discoveries and paradigm shift in knowledge, discoveries of previously unknown historical facts, changing relationships in the society, and several others. Therefore, it is important to overview how American education has changed over the past hundred years.
Firstly, it could be observed that one of the most evident attainments of the American educational system is the elimination of gender and racial segregation in educational institutes. Single-sex education, which was prevalent in the majority of American schools, colleges, and universities until the end of the 19th century, almost completely disappeared by the present day. Racial segregation was successfully eliminated in the second half of the 20th century. Further, it is of high importance to notice that the approach to education has also changed considerably. At the beginning of the 20th century, the behaviorist educational method was prevalent in this sphere. However, in contemporary educational institutes, more efficient techniques are used. This shift of the educational paradigm is observed in the article by Bittman and Russell, in which the authors argue that numerous schools include principles of critical thinking into the educational process. Summarizing these facts, one can state that considerable progress is made in the sphere of education in the United States.
